Story Starter A5

Audrey Corelle straightened her bonnet angrily. “Hugh Brown! I will not stand you picking on smaller children!”

Hugh, who stood five foot six inches, wasn’t to be intimidated by the teacher’s pet. “Well I won’t stand you messing in my business. Anyway why should I listen to a spoiled little monster from back East who thinks she knows it all?”

“Because I’m right, that’s why you should listen!” she retorted. “If you must pick on someone, pick on me! I am big enough to care for myself!”

“Ha! You’re so small that I could crush you up for Christmas pudding with only two fingers!”

“I won’t tolerate your revolting bullying any longer! You deserve to be taught a lesson!” she wrathfully stared Hugh in the eyes. “I challenge you to a contest. Tomorrow in the grove, we will try to see which ever one can get the other to the ground first. No weapons or tools, only fists and feet. If you get me down, then I’ll not say anything more about your doings. But when I get you down, you are not allowed to bully anyone for the rest of your life! Do we have a deal?”

“Deal.” said Hugh. He was pretty confident that this would be easy. But little did he know what he had just gotten himself into.

Suggestions:

-Hugh doesn’t show up, and everyone

laughs. But later Audrey finds out that his dad had beat him.

-They fight it out and Audrey wins, because her rich relative had taken her to live in the Orient for a while, where she learned self defense.

-Hugh wins, but accidently injures Audrey greatly.

-In the action of the fight, a bystander gets injured.

-Before the fight happens, Hugh saves Audrey’s life from a wild animal, and the fight is called off.

-Hugh cheats, and is expelled from school for beating up Audrey. He wants revenge because he feels like it’s her fault.
