Elsie Rose was at the podium giving her farewell address. She had only been at the orphanage six months, but she and I developed a swift friendship, both being sixteen. However, our closeness seemed to have its limits. Her history was never mentioned in the orphanage, and most the girls termed her strange and mysterious.
Nevertheless, her past appeared out of nowhere when a man came, claiming to be her father. I assumed that she would be happy at this recovery, but I hadn’t seen her to confirm it. Today was the first time I’d seen her; and she was the opposite of pleased. Her face was drawn and pale, with dark circles shadowing her eyes. My worries were strengthened when she sang a song of closing. Her voice did not hold its usual bounce. At the last verse, she switched from English to French. She and I were the only people here that spoke French. I blinked and my jaw dropped. In French, she was signaling me for help.
